Hello! T. Hegarty here, and welcome to my wonderful website. I'm currently spending a year in the MAPSS program @ UChicago, where I intend to study the political economies of Britain and China in the 17th & 18th centuries. I previously worked as a Senior DevOps engineer at MarginEdge, and have also been spotted as a sometime theater maker and amatuer writer. I am currently located in Chicago, IL, where I spend my time reading, writing, and talking to my wife and our two cats (usually to the former about the latter).

A project for myself over the 2024 holiday break, while recovering from illness. A little HTML and CSS learning-while-doing, a toe dipped in the JavaScript waters, GitHub pages, CloudFront, etc., and voila! This website was made.

Iago as Intelligent Fool
A project completed in 2017 as an undergrad at UMD, to use NLP tools to analyze Iago's speech patterns in Othello, comparing him to Shakespeare's other famous fools and villains.

a brief note
The pace of software development sped up as LLMs got better at writing code, and my own work in that field is no exception, but any text written in my voice and published under my name is mine and mine alone. I use no generative AI during any stage of the actual writing process. Language Machines, by Leif Weatherby, presents a great case for the abilities of LLMs against language with extremely rigid structure but no "meaning", which explains its success in the development and deployment of code. I, however, want to mean things. No matter how much water they decide to feed Claude Mythos or Thanos or Windex or whatnot, no writing machine will ever be an adequate substitute for what the conscious construction and articulation of an idea can do for the human mind.
Not that I'm speaking too higly of my own writing, mind you. Just writing in general. But hey – I'll always be funnier than an LLM, since, like most things, the jokes work better in person.
